gmt-dbg software package provides Generic Mapping Tools Library - Debugging symbols, you can install in your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) by running the commands given below on the terminal,

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gmt-dbg 

gmt-dbg is installed in your system.

Make ensure the gmt-dbg package were installed using the commands given below,

$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep gmt-dbg *

You will get with gmt-dbg package name, version, architecture and description in a table
