qgis-providers-common software package provides collection of data providers to QGIS - architecture-independent files, you can install in your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install qgis-providers-common
qgis-providers-common is installed in your system.
Make ensure the qgis-providers-common package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep qgis-providers-common *
You will get with qgis-providers-common package name, version, architecture and description in a table
