petsc-dev software package provides Virtual package depending on latest PETSc development package, you can install in your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install petsc-dev
petsc-dev is installed in your system.
Make ensure the petsc-dev package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep petsc-dev *
You will get with petsc-dev package name, version, architecture and description in a table
