iputils-ping software package provides Tools to test the reachability of network hosts, you can install in your Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install iputils-ping
iputils-ping is installed in your system.
Make ensure the iputils-ping package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep iputils-ping *
You will get with iputils-ping package name, version, architecture and description in a table
