checkgmail software package provides alternative Gmail Notifier for Linux via Atom feeds, you can install in your Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install checkgmail
checkgmail is installed in your system.
Make ensure the checkgmail package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep checkgmail *
You will get with checkgmail package name, version, architecture and description in a table
